Founded in 1692, Taylor’s is one of the oldest and most prestigious Port wine houses in the world. For more than three centuries, it has always remained in the hands of the same English family, and is now recognised as an essential reference in the production of exceptional quality Port wines, especially the renowned Vintage Ports.
Taylor’s history intersects with the history of the Douro itself. Situated in the heart of this World Heritage-listed region, Taylor’s has built its reputation on excellence, innovation and a deep respect for tradition. Even today, many of its wines are produced using ancestral methods, such as treading granite presses – an artisanal process that allows for the careful extraction of the best elements of the grapes.
Taylor’s is one of the main vineyard owners in the Douro, with legendary estates such as Quinta de Vargellas, known for producing some of the best Vintage Ports of the 20th and 21st centuries. This deep connection with the land allows for absolute control of quality from vine to bottle.
Among the wines that elevate the Taylor’s name, the following stand out:
Vintage Port – powerful and elegant wines, produced only in years of exceptional harvests. These are wines for aging, made to evolve and surprise over decades.
Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) – a more affordable expression of wines from a single year, aged for longer in wood before being bottled, ready to drink.
Tawnies Harvests and with age indication (10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 80 years) – wines that age slowly in wooden casks, developing complex flavors of dried fruits, honey and spices.
Chip Dry – the first dry White Port on the market, created by Taylor’s in 1934, perfect as an aperitif.
But Taylor’s isn’t just a brand. It is an expression of the soul of the Douro. Each bottle tells a story of patience, mastery and respect for roots. A house that not only seeks to produce excellent wines, but also makes a point of preserving and transmitting a centuries-old culture.
During this month, we invite you to discover or rediscover this iconic house with free tastings of some of its most emblematic wines in our store on Rua da Betesga, in Lisbon.
